SCOTCH BONNET
- Scotch bonnet, also known as bonney peppers or Caribbean red peppers, is a variety of chili pepper named for its resemblance to a traditional Scottish hat called a tam o’shanter. Commonly found in West Africa and the Caribbean, these peppers have a heat rating of 80,000 – 400,000 Scoville units.
- Scotch bonnets range in color from yellow to green to red, with some varieties turning shades of orange and brown when ripe. They are sold both fresh and dried.
BENEFITS
- Fiery and flavorful: The Scotch bonnet’s unique flavor and addictive heat lend themselves to many different world cuisines, especially in hot sauces and other condiments.
- Hot and healthy: Like other hot peppers, Scotch bonnets contain capsaicin, a compound found to increase metabolism and reduce appetite. Capsaicin is also an important component of pain relief medications.
