Snap Pea

SNAP PEA

  • Snap pea, or sugar snap pea, is a cultivar group of edible-podded peas. Often confused for the snow pea, snap peas have more rounded pods than their thicker, flatter cousins.
  • Like other peas, snap peas are pod fruits. Pods of the edible-podded pea, including snap peas, do not have a membrane and do not open when ripe.
  • At maturity, the pods grow to around 4-8 cm in length. Pods contain three to eight peas. Snap pea plants are climbers and require pea sticks or a trellis or other support system for optimal growth. Some cultivars are capable of climbing to 2m high, but plants are more commonly around 1-1.3m high for ease of harvest and cultivation.

BENEFITS

  • Nutrient-rich: Because of their Vitamin C, Vitamin K and fiber content, snap peas may help to reduce heart disease risk and improve blood pressure control, gut health, and weight loss.
  • Mouthful of minerals: Snap peas contain iron and manganese. Iron is important for oxygen transport and manganese helps with blood sugar support. A 100 g serving contains 26 percent of the daily recommended value of iron and 12 percent of the recommended intake of manganese.
